Drawing on papyrus texts from the circle of aristocratic Egyptian families, among whom the Apiones are particularly prominent, the authors of the papers presented in this volume throw light on central aspects of the history, economy and society of the Byzantine world. The volume not only offers general contributions on basic themes and specific problems, it also provides editions of previously unpublished texts as well as revisions of published ones. The volume is the result of the international conference "Potere e richezza nell'Egitto bizantino: la famiglia degli Apioni," which took place in Udine in March 2008.
