Until now, word formation has remained a neglected area in research on children’s acquisition of the German language, probably due to the fact that gathering this type of grammatical data from children is particularly difficult. This volume is, in fact, the first comprehensive study that has been done on word formation in the acquisition of German. By documenting a German-speaking child from birth until entering school, the volume focuses on discovering word formation patterns and their order during this stage of life, as well as how individual patterns developed with regard to the child’s adopting the usual vocabulary of her caretakers. The book is not only relevant for linguists and developmental psychologists, but also for educators who are interested in the ability of preschool and school children to create new words.
