After Schelling and during his era as well, natural philosophy was part of a detailed discussion surrounding the evaluation of the conception of nature, a determination of the position of the sciences and anthropology. This volume is designed as a handbook presenting in detail these different views of natural philosophy, some of which are controversial. As a lexicon of authors, it gives access to the relevant concepts of natural philosophy and imparts information on the biographies and works of German-language authors up to 1860.

Die Herausgeber haben auf über 800 Seiten die ungewöhnliche, aber angemessene Form eines Autorenlexikons gewählt. Es bietet ein Maximum an Information und kann als verständliche Einführung in einen wichtigen Abschnitt der Geschichte der Naturwissenschaften nach Schelling (bis 1860) gelesen werden.
