St Emmeram is the largest church complex in South Germany from the pre-Romanesque era. It is as significant for the history of politics and Church as for the history of art and culture, and an exceedingly precious monument to the highly developed architectural creative powers of early Bavaria. It surpasses all other churches in Regensburg in its venerable age and the sweeping extent and rich variety of its sacred spaces.
