To celebrate several anniversaries related to the Archaeological Collection and the subject of Classical Archaeology at Zurich University the temporal exhibition “Exekias painted and made me” was held. In this context an international conference took place, the proceedings of which are published here. It is dedicated to the memory of John Robert Guy [1949-2020] and contains an introduction, 15 papers, and a bibliography. The contributions deal with questions of mastery, additions to Exekias’ œuvre, his supreme art and its afterlife, Exekias’ relation with Group E at Locri Epizefiri, his amphoras from Orvieto in general and at the University of Pennsylvania Museum in particular, Achilles and his companions on the amphora Philadelphia MS 3442, the heroic genre as a means of characterisation by the example of amphora Vatican 344, the everyday life of heroes as shown by Exekias’ board game players, Achilles and Ajax at play, the beginnings of the thiasos, shield signs on Exekias’ vessels, Exekias and the volute krater, innovations as to pottery and iconography by Group E and Exekias, as well as Exekias’ surroundings by the example of the Mastos Painter and his group.
