The New Testament theologian Eduard Lohse subscribes to these words of Goethe completely. The main concern of this introduction lies in exposing the roots of early Christianity. He takes a look at the general situation and conditions of that time and describes both the historical and theological environment. This is not done through an effusion of details, but rather by concentrating on communicating the main features that led to the evolvement of early Christianity.

Ohne die Geschichte Jesu von Nazareth hätte es das Christentum nicht gegeben, aber wie sahen die Anfänge der christlichen Kirche aus? Unter welchen Bedingungen wuchs das Urchristentum heran?
Zum Kern der Botschaft Jesu vorzudringen vermag nur, wer sich dem ursprünglichen Kontext des Christentums und den Anfängen der Kirche nähert – mit aller methodischer Sorgfalt. Eduard Lohse entdeckt Umfeld und Hintergründe des Urchristentums und legt dabei seine Quellen frei. Er zeigt, wie sich die christliche Urgemeinde entwickelt hat. Dabei wertet er die einschlägigen wissenschaftlichen Forschungsergebnisse aus, ohne sich jedoch in der zuweilen komplizierten und den Blick für das Wesentliche versperrenden wissenschaftlichen Fachdiskussion zu verlieren.
