Beschreibung
The publication “Becher” by Dennis Fuchs presents works from the series of small sculptures of the same name. The porcelain and ceramic objects move (often literally swaying) along the line between sculpture and drinking vessel. As Julia Meyer-Brehm notes, the mugs “combine painting, drawing and sculpture, appearing naive and at the same time incredibly smart.” Fuchs mugs play with classics of design history such as the German onion pattern and break up the seemingly familiar with aspects of contemporary consumer culture. No two mugs are the same; their diversity takes the relationship between form and function ad absurdum.
In the exhibition context, visitors can choose and drink from the multitude of different cups. The selection creates a connection between art and the visitors' idiosyncrasies, but also between the drinkers themselves. A special detail is the cover of the book, which contains an integrated beer mat - a useful gimmick that recalls the origins of Fuchs' cups in pubs and project space bars. The works from DAGs catalogue extrafein are characterized by the analogue, drawing-based approach on old paper taken from a 1960s paper factory`s pattern book. He integrates writing-like, geometric, repetitive drawing elements into the pre-printed lines on the paper samples. Using technical aids, he creates an atmosphere reminiscent of mapping or music scores, creating unique artworks with autobiographical references.
